A creator of innovative technology and built products, Shan-Shan Wang (2008) has worked alongside global brands, multinational companies and startups throughout the Asia Pacific region. Her work, which she takes from concept to mass production, is grounded in business viability, market desirability, and a commitment to making a positive impact on society.

An MLC School student from Year 7 2003 to Year 12 2008, in her final year Shan-Shan was one of the Lester Captains who oversaw Lester’s win of the House Spirit Trophy for the first time in Lester’s history. At School Shan-Shan was an avid sports person; she played Cricket and Softball and was a member of the Hockey Firsts. At the 2007 Speech Night, Shan-Shan was awarded the Kareen Healy Memorial All-Rounder Sports Award.

After School, Shan-Shan completed a Bachelor of Industrial Design (with 1st Class Honours) at the University of NSW and later the CORe course (Business Analytics, Economics for Managers and Financial Accounting) through the Harvard Business School Online.

Shan-Shan has been named one of Australia’s youngest innovators and a next generation cutting-edge business leader by such publications as Business Insider, AMP Amplify, Sydney Morning Herald, the Australia’s Womens’ Weekly and Qantas – Women of the Future. Her ideas have won multiple international design and innovation awards including: James Dyson Award, NASA International SpaceApps, International Red Dot Design, to name just a few.

Shan-Shan’s focus is on human-centred product and industrial design. She is able to transform her ideas into commercially viable products. Her current focus, as the CEO and Industrial Designer at Roam Technologies, is the development of a novel medical device which will replace the need for oxygen cylinders, making it possible for oxygen to be accessible and available to everyone everywhere.

The idea for this innovation came when she saw a child being pushed on a swing by his mother while breathing from an oxygen cylinder larger than the child himself. Shan-Shan was surprised that no one had updated such unwieldy equipment, so she decided to bring ‘20th century technology into the 21st century’ by developing a smarter, lighter and more efficient oxygen system. She founded Roam Technologies with the mission of universal oxygen access. Shan-Shan and her team created JUNO – the Intelligent Portable Oxygen Concentrator, a world first smart, hand-held oxygen concentrator providing continuous oxygen delivery. The technology invented by Shan-Shan and her team will influence an industry that hasn’t seen innovation in over a decade.

This innovation demonstrates Shan-Shan’s ongoing commitment to using her skills and expertise to make a positive impact on society, particularly in the field of medicine.
