Tara Sarathy (2001)

A Kindergarten–Year 12 student, Tara’s formative experience at MLC School played a significant role in shaping her personal and professional commitment to human rights and gender equity.

After commencing her career as an international human rights lawyer with the United Nations, Tara became interested in gender issues and spent the next 13 years working on women’s rights in conflict, post-conflict and development contexts. The primary focus of her work was considering how political insecurity shapes cultural, racial and gendered power imbalances. In practice, much of this work involved creating space for women from marginalised communities to share their stories and make critical demands of their governments and the international community. Tara worked across a range of UN system entities, including the UN High Commission for Human Rights, the Department of Peace Operations and the UN Action Network Against Sexual Violence in Conflict.

After moving back to Australia, Tara turned her attention to power imbalances in Australian workplaces. As a Director at the Australian Human Rights Commission, Tara supported federal security organisations to undertake complex and sensitive workplace cultural transformation. She worked with the Sex Discrimination Commissioner to implement the Respect@Work legislative amendments, including the positive duty on all Australian employers to prevent sexual harassment and sex based discrimination in the workplace.

In 2023, Tara started working with PwC Australia’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion consulting team, assisting employers across Australia to navigate industrial relations, employment and anti-discrimination laws. She supports clients to prevent and address inappropriate workplace behaviours, manage psychosocial risks and to mitigate the gender pay gap.

Tara attended the University of Sydney and Columbia University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Government & International Relations) and a Bachelor of Laws. She furthered her education with a Master of Laws from NYU School of Law.

Tara was recently appointed to the NSW Government’s Corporate Leadership Group on Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence.

Tara’s career reflects a commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. She continues to drive meaningful change, advocating for policies and practices that promote fair and inclusive workplace cultures. Through her work, Tara seeks to influence organisational policies and practices to create more equitable and inclusive work environments.
