Now based in Los Angeles, Shirley is doing incredible work in the cutthroat, male-dominated industry of film and television music composition. She is known for her composing work for: Netflix’s XO, Kitty, the television spinoff of the To All the Boys film series; Netflix’s Exploding Kittens; the Apple TV+ film Lulu is a Rhinoceros; the Apple TV+/DreamWorks series Be@rBricks, with legendary producer Timbaland serving as music executive producer; the Amazon Prime film Five Blind Dates; the Netflix romantic comedy A Tourist’s Guide to Love; and the 2021 Netflix holiday film The Princess Switch 3: Romancing the Star, starring Vanessa Hudgens.
Her latest film, Slanted, premiered at SXSW, where it won the Narrative Feature Grand Jury Award, and was released theatrically in March 2026. Shirley has also contributed to numerous films and television series, including Pixar’s Onward (2020), The Addams Family (2019), HBO Max’s Julia (based on the life of renowned chef Julia Child), Disney’s Mira, Royal Detective, season two of the CBS series Strange Angel, Netflix’s Alias Grace, the Oscar-nominated film The Breadwinner, and all four of the Guillermo del Toro-created animation series on DreamWorks/Netflix: Tales of Arcadia: Trollhunters, 3Below, Wizards, and Rise of the Titans.
Shirley graduated from the University of Sydney/Sydney Conservatorium of Music with a Bachelor of Music in Composition with Honours, and later from the renowned Berklee College of Music’s Film Scoring program. She has also had her concert music performed at prestigious venues across Sydney, including at the Sydney Opera House.
In 2023, Shirley was selected as one of twelve composers for the Composer Filmmaker Accelerator at the Vancouver International Film Festival, where her music was recorded and performed by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. She is currently one of eight composers selected for the NBCUniversal Composers Initiative (2024 – 2026).
In the traditionally male-dominated industry of film and television, Shirley is a trailblazer whose achievements have helped pave the way for greater inclusion and representation. Through her talent and willingness to challenge established norms, she has broken barriers that once limited opportunities for women. Her success not only highlights her individual excellence but also serves as a powerful source of inspiration for young women who aspire to pursue careers in the creative arts. By demonstrating that perseverance and skill can overcome systemic obstacles, Shirley continues to influence a new generation to believe in their potential and strive for change within the industry.
