Cherie Pepperell (2020) – Guinness World Record holder!

Old Girl and current Engineering student, Cherie Pepperell (2020), has spent the past year with the UNSW solar car team, Sunswift, who set a Guinness World Record!

Cherie’s commitment to both academics and co-curricular was evident during her time at MLC School. In her final year she was Debating and Public Speaking Captain, and at the 2020 Speech Night, Cherie was awarded the Caltex Best All-Rounder Award, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Scheme Gold Award, a Music Director’s Award, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB) Prizes for Geography and Physics.

At the Excellence in Academic Achievement in February 2021, Cherie was recognised for IB Indonesian SL and Mathematics SL after she achieved the top Band (Band 7) and came first in the MLC School cohort after the final examinations. She was also awarded an Excellence in Academic Achievement Award which is given to those who achieved an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) of 98 after she achieved a 99.55 ATAR.

After MLC School, Cherie commenced a Mechanical/Biomechanical Engineering degree at the University of NSW (UNSW). When asked why she picked her degree, Cherie said that she has “always been interested in how things function. I possess strong analytical and logical skills and engineering allows me to extend those skills.”

In 2022, Cherie was on the Executive of the UNSW Biomedical Engineering Students’ Society as their Workshop Coordinator. Also in 2022, Cherie joined the UNSW Solar Car Racing Team, Sunswift Racing, who in December 2022, the set the world record for the ‘Fastest 1000km achieved by an electric vehicle on a single charge’. Cherie recently wrote about her experiences with the Sunswift Team who designed and manufactured the world record-breaking ‘Sunswift 7’ and her ongoing commitment to the Team as she takes on the role of Team Manager as they start on ‘Sunswift 8’.
