Marina Wong (Bjelja, 1996)

2024 Alumnae Award for Sporting Achievement

Marina Wong (Bjelja, 1996), elite athlete and mother of three children, is smashing marathon records across the globe.

Running a marathon is an extraordinary feat, requiring a tremendous amount of discipline, training, and mental toughness. Marina has shown all these qualities and more by, to date, crossing the finish line in 12 marathons. A mother of three children, Marina has shown great dedication and perseverance in achieving such impressive accomplishments. Her hard work and commitment have paid off with ever-improving marathon results.

In 2021, Marina won the Brisbane Marathon Festival after taking the lead at 38kms. She not only broke her personal best by nine minutes, she also broke the race record that was set in 1997. Later in the same year, she placed 5th overall for women in the Melbourne Marathon, running a personal best of 2:40:04.

At the 2023 London Marathon, when Marina powered her way to 2:42 finish, she completed the elite World Marathon Majors collection. The World Marathon Majors is a championship-style competition for marathon runners that started in 2006. More than 800 marathons are organised every year, but only six have the title of World Marathon Major: Tokyo Marathon, Boston Marathon, London Marathon, Berlin Marathon, Chicago Marathon and New York City Marathon. Amateur and elite athletes race the 42.195 km across some of the most iconic city streets in the world, and completing all six races grants a runner entry into an exclusive club and earns them a Six Star Medal. Last year, Mariana became the first woman to claim the Six Star Medal at the London Marathon.

Marina is the epitome of the fuss-free athlete – she has completed multiple marathons, with all the preparation they require, while managing a busy family with three active and sporty children. We congratulate Marina on her incredible success. Her determination, resilience, and perseverance have propelled her to remarkable achievements in the world of running. With each race conquered, she has not only surpassed physical barriers but has also inspired others to pursue their own goals. Her dedication to training and passion for running serves as a shining example of what can be accomplished through hard work and dedication. MLC School celebrates Marina’s numerous accomplishments in the marathon circuit and looks forward to hearing about her future achievements.
