Receiving the MLC School Teacher Education Scholarship is an incredible honour for Kevinly Santoso. ‘It means joining a mission bigger than myself—helping shape students into lifelong learners who are resilient, curious, and socially responsible,’ he says. This scholarship is not just a recognition of his achievements but a commitment to making a real impact in students' lives. It also provides him with the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded educators who uphold the same high academic standards he values. The MLC School Teacher Education Scholarship was awarded to support a full-time Master of Teaching (Secondary) student at the University of Sydney while they undertake an internship at MLC School alongside their postgraduate studies.
Kevinly's shift from Mechatronic Engineering to teaching was driven by a desire to do more. ‘While engineering challenged me with something new every day, I wanted to do more,’ he reflects. His journey was often solitary, and he recognises the crucial role of guidance and support in shaping his success. This realisation inspired him to become a teacher, to be the mentor he once needed. ‘I want to help students see the power of education, build confidence in their abilities, and recognise that learning is a lifelong journey,’ he explains.
An engineering background lends itself to teaching. ‘Problem-solving is at the core of both fields,’ he notes. As an engineer, he learned to break down complex challenges, test solutions, and optimise results—skills that translate seamlessly into teaching. He also developed a mindset of continuous improvement, always seeking better ways to explain concepts. Most importantly, engineering taught him how to learn, a skill he now passes on to his students so they can confidently navigate an ever-evolving world.
Kevinly's goal is to show students that Mathematics and Science, especially Physics, are more than just subjects—they're tools to unlock the mysteries of the universe. ‘But beyond the content, I want to teach them what took me years to realise: it's not about learning a topic, but about learning how to learn,’ he emphasises. He aims to empower his students with curiosity and the ability to adapt, so they become lifelong learners.
One moment that reinforced Kevinly's decision to become a teacher was when a student he tutored said, "Kev, when I talk to you—whether about math or life—it feels like anything is possible." This moment was everything to him. Knowing he could change how a student felt about learning and help them believe in their own potential reinforced that he was on the right path. ‘Teaching isn’t just about academics—it’s about shaping confidence, mindset, and future possibilities,’ he concludes.
Kevinly Santoso's MLC School journey from engineering to education is a testament to the transformative power of teaching when you are supported by those around you. His dedication to empowering MLC School girls and fostering their love for learning shows the true power of this scholarship initiative.
