It is with sadness that we share the news that MLC School Old Girl, 2021 Alumnae Award winner and eminent educator, Dr Sylvia Walton AO (Collis, 1957) passed away in Melbourne on Saturday 27 January 2024.

Sylvia’s life was one of unwavering dedication to education. Her esteemed career spanned several decades and was marked by dedication, compassion, and a commitment to excellence that significantly contributed to the growth and development of educational institutions in Melbourne and beyond.

Colleagues and students defined Sylvia’s leadership style as one of inspiration and innovation. As an educator, she not only imparted knowledge but also instilled a passion for learning and a commitment to excellence. Her influence reached beyond administrative leadership; she was at all times actively engaged with students, faculty, and the broader community.

The hallmark of Sylvia’s career was her dedication to excellence in education. Her passion for creating a vibrant and enriching educational environment was evident at all times; she championed curriculum enhancements, fostered research initiatives, and advocated for inclusivity. She set a high standard for educational institutions, challenging them to continually innovate and evolve.

In addition to her distinguished career, Sylvia will be remembered for her compassion and genuine concern for the well-being of students and colleagues. Her approach to education was infused with empathy and she strove to create a nurturing environment and a culture of support and understanding that encouraged personal growth and development.

The MLC School community sends its love and condolences to Sylvia’s husband, Robin, son Evan, and the entire Walton family. In this time of sadness, we honour Sylvia’s memory and that of her beloved family.

The students Sylvia mentored, the educators she influenced, and the institutions she guided will continue to carry forward her legacy. Her leadership, dedication, and compassion will continue to inspire generations of students and educators. We celebrate the lasting impact Sylvia leaves on education in Australia.
